Blencathra and Sharp Edge

Another wonderful day today in the Lake District, today we climbed Blencathra and Sharp Edge from Threlkeld, great views and cooler weather throughout.

We set off from Threlkeld to climb Blencathra and Sharp Edge at 10am and climbed by Gategill Farm climbing up the steep slope onto the Halls Fell ridge with the summit of Blencathra in view above.

The weather was glorious today, there was a bit more of a breeze than there had been for the past week or so and we were soon up onto Halls Fell Ridge, scrambling along the ridge to the summit of Blencathra.

The views from the top were great, we had good views south over Helvellyn and west to Grasmoor and Skiddaw.

From the summit we descended onto the start of the Scales Fell ridge, stopping to eat our sandwiches on the grassy slope with a glorious view over Scales Tarn to Sharp Edge.

After we finished lunch we dropped down to Scales Tarn and were soon back up onto the ridge at the start of Sharp Edge.

It was perfect weather today for crossing Sharp Edge and we were soon over the edge and climbing up Foule Crag to Atkinson Pike and following the path back to the summit of Blencathra.

This time the views from the summit of Blencathra were even better than earlier, the air had cleared a little giving us some glorious longer views south over Great Gable and to the Scafell range and even to the Coniston Fells at the southern edge of the Lake District.

After a short stop for some photograhps we pressed on, crossing the ridge west to Blease Fell and descended the path with some of the best views of the day as we looked over Keswick and Derwentwater to Borrowdale and Newlands.

We took the path down towards Threlkeld above Blease Farm and followed Kilnhow Beck back into Threlkeld and the Horse and Farrier for a well earned drink.
