The Old Man of Coniston

A day of fantastic weather took us to the summits of four fells in the Coniston range. The sun was out and giant clouds sailed by giving us some much needed shade as we climbed the steep path past the old copper mines to the summit of The Old Man of Coniston. We had a break on top, admiring the views over Coniston Water to Windermere and the Yorkshire Dales in the Distance, and south to Morecambe Bay.

Our walk then took us north over Brim Fell to Swirl How, the clouds finally rising above the Scafell summits and the air so clear we could easily see the hills of the Isle of Man over the Irish Sea, the land blue in the haze. A cold wind picked up as we walked along the ridge and reached Swirl How, where we looked down over Little Langdale.

Wetherlam was our final peak, reached after a fine walk down the Prison Band and a gradual climb over the rocky outcrops surrounding the summit. Our descend, back in sunshine, gave us great views over Coniston Water and then the town itself as it came into view. Back out of the wind it was hot again and we looked back up at the sun glinting from the Old Man's summit, now far behind.
