"This is a mountain that compels attention, even from those dull people who's eyes are not habitually lifted to the hills."
A.W Wainwright

This more direct route over the summit of Blencathra takes in the spectacular Halls Fell Ridge.

This is a direct line from Threlkeld to the summit of Blencathra with spectacular rocky scenery and wide panoramic views, on a good day of almost the entire Lake District.

This is one of the classic guided walks routes in the Lakes.

Summits included on this route:

Blencathra
869 metres/2848 feet
Mungrisdale Common (Optional)
633 metres/2077 feet

The derivation of the name Blencathra: The first part of the name derives from the welsh Blaen, a summit. The second part of the name probably derives from the welsh cateir, a chair, similar to Cader Idris in Wales.

The name Saddleback by which the fell is also know does not appear until 1869.

From Threlkeld we will cross the fields to Halls Farm where we will climb the steep slopes onto Halls Fell Ridge, a good rocky ridge leading directly to the summit of Blencathra.

In good conditions we will have the option to descend to Scales Tarn and re-climb to the summit, this time climbing the famous Sharp Edge ridge before descending over either Blease Fell or Mungrisdale Common back to Threlkeld.

Please note that the decision to take in the Sharp Edge ridge is entirely at the Group Leaders discretion.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Equipment Required.
