"The Coniston Fells are predominantly Lakeland, with lofty ridges, steep and craggy declivities, lovely waterfalls and lonely tarns and the general scenic charm so typical of the district."
A.W Wainwright

The Coniston Fells at the southern tip of the Lake District offer wonderful high ridges with interesting summits and expansive views of both Lakeland and south over Morecambe Bay.

Over this weekend we will take in all the high summits of the Coniston Massif, on the Saturday climbing Dow Crag and the Old Man of Coniston from Coniston Village while on day 2 we will tackle Wetherlam ans Swirl How from Little Langdale.

Summits included on this route:

Dow Crag
778 metres/2552 feet
The Old Man of Coniston
803 metres/2635 feet
Brim Fell
796 metres/2612 feet
Swirl How
802 metres/2631 feet
Wetherlam

Swirl How
802 metres/2631 feet
Grey Friar (Optional)

"This fine hill is too vast and sturdy to be disfigured and weakened by man's feeble scratchings on it's surface, and remains today, as of old, a compelling presence to which walkers in Brathay will oft turn their eager steps."
A.W Wainwright

The Coniston Fells
From Coniston Village we climb via the Walna Scar Road to the wonderful Dow Crag ridge before climbing to the summit of The Old Man of Coniston and Brim Fell.

The views from the summit ridge are spectacular, we will follow this ridge to Levers Hause and descend by Levers Water into Coppermines Valley and back to Coniston Village.

Wetherlam from Little Langdale
From the Three Shires Inn in Little Langdale we will cross the fields to the Slaters Bridge, an ancient bridge crossing the river to the mine workings beyond. The old mine track will bring us into the Greenburn Valley from where we will climb south onto the ridge near Birk Fell, following Wetherlam Edge to the summit of Wetherlam.

The route takes us around Black Sails to Swirl Hause where we will climb the Prison Band path to the summit of Swirl How.

A short optional detour to the summit of Grey Friar can be taken here, otherwise we will proceed along the ridge to Great Carrs and descend the long Wet Side Edge ridge back down to Greenburn and the path back to Little Langdale.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Equipment Required.
