"The summit of Snowdon: you are here, nearer to Heaven."
The Welsh National Poet, Gwyn Thomas

A wonderful weekends walking covering some of the best routes in Snowdonia.

On Saturday we will take on the classic Snowdon Horseshoe climbing the famous Crib Goch ridge to the summit.

On Sunday we will climb Tryfan and follow the Glyders ridge to the west, another classic day in the mountains.

Summits included on this route:

Crib Goch
923 metres/3028 feet
Garnedd Ugain
1065 metres/3494 feet
Snowdon
1085 metres/3560 feet
Y Lliwedd
898 metres/2946 feet
Tryfan
917 metres/3010 feet
Glyder Fach
994 metres/3261 feet
Glyder Fawr
1001 metres/3284 feet
Y Garn
947 metres/3107 feet
Pen Yr Ole Wen
978 metres/3227 feet
Carnedd Dafydd
1044 metres/3445 feet
Carnedd Llywelyn
1064 metres/3511 feet

The first recorded ascent of Snowdon was by the botanist Thomas Johnson in 1639.

However, the 18th-century Welsh historian Thomas Pennant mentions a "triumphal fair upon this our chief of mountains" following Edward I's conquest of Wales in 1284, which, if true, indicates the possibility of earlier ascents.

The Snowdon Horseshoe (Saturday)
From the Pen-y-pass we will climb the start of the PYG track, turning off the over used path at Bwlch y Moch and climbing onto the Crib Goch ridge.

We will traverse the Crib Goch ridge from east to west and climb to the summit of Garnedd Ugain from where an easy path will take us around the crest of the ridge above Glasslyn to the summit of Snowdon and the modern summit cafe.

From the summit of Snowdon we will descend to the south east, descending above Llyn Llydaw to the twin summits of Y Lliwedd, following this fine ridge as it curves to the north and descends to the shores of Llyn Llydaw

and the Miners Track back to the Pen-y-pass.

Tryfan and the Glyderau (Sunday)
From Idwal Cottage a short walk to the east will bring us to the lower slopes of Tryfan from where a wonderful scramble will bring us to the summit of Tryfan.

After a short descent to the south of the summit of Tryfan a short but steep climb will bring us to the summit of Glyder Fach and the main Glyderau ridge.

The ridge continues west to the summit of Glyder Fawr, the highest summit of the day.

From Glyder Fawr the ridge turns to the north west, descending past Llyn y Cwn before the long gentle climb to the summit of Y Garn, the final summit of the day.

Our route of descent is to the east, down to Lyn Idwal and following the good path back to Idwal Cottage.

The Carneddau Range
This route climbs from the shores of Lyn Ogwen by Cwm Lloer to the summit of Pen Yr Ole Wen. The ridge north from Pen Yr Ole Wen climbs north over Carnedd Fach and then climbs to Carnedd Dafydd.

The fine ridge to the north east now leads to the summit of Carnedd Llywelyn, the highest point of the day.

The south east ridge of Carnedd Llywelyn descends over Pen Yr Helgi Du ridge descending back to the Ogwen Valley and our start point.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Equipment Required.
