"What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know."
Rene Daumal

The Lake District has a wide array of scope for good scrambling, Jack's Rake, Pinnacle Ridge, Cam Crag, Lorton Gully and many others spill off the tongue as classic examples. For the beginner or the walker looking to exxperience scrambling for the first time the question is where to start?

This two day course will take in some of the best scrambles in the Lake District, giving useful instruction and advice on techniques, equipment and route choice.

"Doubly happy, however, is the man to whom lofty mountain tops are within reach."
John Muir

Scrambling routes to many of the Lake District summits provide varied, interesting and usually a more aesthetically pleasing approach to what may otherwise be a busy and often pedestrian way to the top.

Scrambles are graded from 1 to 3.
Grade 1 is unlikely to require a rope but would involve steep and often exposed ground, where good route choice is important and may be used in most weather conditions.
Grade 2 requires the use of a rope and elementary rock climbing skills to negotiate steeper ridges and gullies; certain weather conditions may affect these scrambles.
Grade 3 is usually more grade 2 ground with perhaps some route finding decisions to be made. A rope is used throughout.

The mountaineering skills and rope techniques employed during this course are ideal training for all mountaineering expeditions.

The course covers all the necessary rope skills used throughout mountaineering, including:

  • Belays
  • Abseiling
  • Shortening the rope
  • Moving together
  • Route selection

Some of the possible scrambles are:

Jack's Rake
A classic Grade 1 scramble high on the face of Pavey Ark in the Langdale Pikes.

Brim Fell Slabs
One of the many great scrambles in the Coniston area, a series of broken crags climbing to the summit of Brim Fell which can be combined with a variety of other routes.

Pinnacle Ridge
A wonderful 3 star grade 3 scramble, the closest thing to an alpine route in the Lake District. Experience Required Our Scrambling Weekends are available to anyone who is looking to extend their previous walking experience.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Equipment Required.
