"Most of the high places in Lakeland have no places in history books... Not so High Street which as been known and trodden, down through the ages."
A.Wainwright

High Street is the highest of the Far Eastern Fells, it's huge whale back shape can be seen from much of the Lake District and is the destination for many fellwalkers who set out from the valleys of Patterdale, Kentmere or Mardale. The broad grassy summit is a wonderful place on a sunny day where wonderful views can be seen or in midwinter when skiers cross the summit as often as walkers.

In the past the summit ridge has been frequented by Romans, the High Street Roman Road traverses the ridge, the original track can be seen just a short distance to the west of the summit. In more recent times the name Racecourse Hill was given to High Street, during the summer an annual fair took place on the summit plateau where horse races took place.
