Great Calva

Great Calva

"There is a remarkable vista, like looking along the sights of a gun, through the heart of the district to the low Windermere fells in the extreme south."
A.W Wainwright

The remote heather covered hills to the north of the Skiddaw massif offer a different type of walking to much of central Lakeland. The gentle slopes well away from the crowds of the more famous fells are more similar to some of the heights in the Yorkshire Dales or the Pennines.

The views from these fells although not extensive to the south, except from the summit of Great Calva, offer great views to the north west over the Solway Firth to Scotland.

"Most regular visitors to Lakeland will be familiar with the outline of Great Calva even though they may never in their wanderings have been within miles of it."
A.W Wainwright
