Helvellyn

"Legend and poetry, a lovely name and a loft altitude combine to encompass Helvellyn in an aura of romance."
A. Wainwright

The flat summit of Helvellyn makes a wonderful viewpoint over almost the entire length and breadth of the Lake District, from Pillar and the Western Fells to High Street in the Eastern Fells and Skiddaw in the Northern Fells to Coniston Old Man in the Southern Fells the views are expansive.

But there are definately two sides to Helvellyn, to the west of the summit gentle slopes rise up from Thirlmere, steeply at first before easing off in gradient as they rise to the summit cairn.

To the east the scenery is altogether more dramatic, with steep rocky crags and the two famous edges of Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, climbing above Red Tarn to join the summit ridge, there really is something for everyone on Helvellyn.

The Lake District Walker have regular Helvellyn guided walks climbing from either Wythburn, on the shores of Thirlmere or from Glenridding, climbing along the wonderful scramble of Striding Edge.
