Dodd lies in the forestry land of Dodd Wood, the slopes of the fell being heavily forested, but the summit of the fell, now cleared of trees offers a wonderful viewpoint, over Bassenthwaite Lake to the north west and south over Derwentwater through Borrowdale to the high fells of Scafell Pike, Great End and Great Gable, the view is superb.

In recent years Ospreys have nested on the lower slopes of Dodd, a viewpoint has been set up by the RSPB and is now a popular visitor attraction, and now a walk to the viewpoint can be combined with climbing to the summit of Dodd and the higher peak of Skiddaw beyond, see our Skiddaw and the Ospreys walk.

Although heavily forested the lower slopes of Dodd are well maintained and are a great place to watch wildlife, red squirrels, roe deer and many varieties of birds can be seen on a walk through the woods.
