"glorious views, that to the north being of unsurpassed beauty."
A. Wainwright

One of the less trodden routes, Glaramara, near Stonethwaite village in the Lake District is a great chance to get off the beaten track whilst still being amongst the highest fells in England.

The route over Bessyboot, Dovesnest Crags and Coombe Head follows a ridge with hardly a path in sight, just a gentle rambling ridge climbing over several rocky crags.

Let our guides take you away from the crowds to find solitude in the Borrowdale fells with great views of the high fells all around the ridge.

Summits included on this route:

Rosthwaite Fell
550 metres/1807 feet
Glaramara
783 metres/2569 feet

Glaramara's most striking feature is Combe Gill on its northern slopes, a classic example of a hanging valley that was formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age. The gill is full of crags and according to Alfred Wainwright contains the only natural cave in the Lake District, these are the Dove Nest Caves, a rock slip from Dove Nest Crags has partly covered the cave which has three entrances.

From Stonethwaite we will climb steeply to the summit of Bessyboot.

The great rambling route continues over Dovenest Crag and Combe Head, with wonderful views over Borrowdale to the rocky summit of Glaramara.

From Glaramara we will descend the good path down the Thorneythwaite Crag ridge and across the fields back to Stonethwaite.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.
