  • The 24 Peaks Challenge

  • High Raise from Grasmere

A great day climbing High Raise from Grasmere in cold and crisp weather, climbing by Silver How and Blea Rigg before descending over Tarn Crag and Easdale Tarn.
  • The Caldbeck Fells

A good day today on the Caldbeck Fells.

Despite a dismal forecast this morning we headed out from Fell Side just before 10am, although it had been wet overnight the worst we got on the climb up to High Pike was light drizzle.

We followed the old mine tracks up to the summit cairn, reaching the top in about 40 minutes.

The cloud was now down over the summit restricting our views, we followed the ridge south to Great Lingey Hut, stopping for a few minutes in the hut for a snack before pressing on and climbing in thick mist to the summit of Knott.

From Knott we followed the north ridge crossing to the summit of Great Sca Fell and then down to Little Sca Fell, stopping for our lunches in the shelter by the summit.

After lunch we continued north dropping down to the summit of Brae Fell before picking up the path crossing to Lothwaite Fell.

As we reached Lothwaite Fell we dropped out of the clouds and were rewarded with some gret views towards the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake.

We followed the ridge down over Longlands Fell to Charleton Wath following the track and then the lane back to Fellside.

  • Helvellyn & Striding Edge

Another great day on Helvellyn and Striding Edge today.

We set off from Glenridding just after 10am and climbed by Lanty's Tarn, turning off the main path to follow the wall along the ridge towards Birkhouse Moor, the weather today was great, the wind of the last few days had eased and there looked little chance of rain as we climbed to meet the Mires Beck path up onto Birkhouse Moor.

From Birkhouse Moor we followed the ridge west, past the 'Hole in the Wall' and climbed up towards High Spying How and Striding Edge, taking a short break at High Spying How before climbing onto Striding Edge.

We had little problem crossing Striding Edge today and were soon climbing up the final slog towards the summit of Helvellyn, the wind on the summit plateau was a bit stronger than lower down, we stopped for our sandwiches by the Gough Memorial, just out of the wind and with a wonderful view over Red Tarn and Ullwsater.

As we ate lunch we caught a few drops of rain, just the edge of what looked like quite a heavy shower to our north.

After lunch we crossed to the summit cairn for the usual photo stop before descending onto the Swirral Edge path and out to Catstycam before dropping down onto the Greenside Mine track down to the mines and back to Glenridding.

  • Grasmoor, Whiteless Pike and Whiteside

A great day today above Buttermere, from Hause Point we climbed the steep western end of Rannerdale Knotts and followed the ridge east to pick up the path climbing to Whiteless Pike.
The weather was great, although there was quite a strong breeze it was nothing compared to the last few days.
From Whiteless Pike we climbed over Thirdgill Head Man and onto the grassy summit of Wandope, the views were great and we could see as far as the Yorkshire Dales.
From Wandope we crossed Wandope Moss and climbed to the summit of Grasmoor, stopping in the summit shelter for lunch before descending to Coledale Hause and climbing the steep path over Sand Hill to the wonderful summit of Hopegill Head.
From Hopegill Head we followed the ridge down over Whiteside, the great ridge bringing us back down to Lanthwaite Green.

  • Navigation Training Silver How

A good day on Silver How today on a Navigation Training course.

We set off from Elterwater at 9.30am and climbed above High Close onto the Dow Bank ridge, running several excercises along the ridge to Silver How and then as far as Swinescar Pike before returning along the ridge as fae as Down Bank and then back down to Elterwater.

A few showers today, but we seem to have got off lightly compared to others.

  • Pillar and the High Level Route

A wet and windy day today climbing Pillar by the High Level Route, we set off from Wasdale Head at 8am and climbed towards Black Sail Pass, the weather was dry as we set off from the valley, but it didn't take too long before it started, waterproofs were on before we reached Gatherstone Beck and the rain got harder as we climbed to the pass, once we reached the pass the winds increased as well.

We continued and as we turned off the ridge onto the High Level Route we dropped out of the wind. We made good progress to Robinson's Cairn, with occasional glimpses down into the Ennerdale Valley and climbed from Robinson's Cairn up onto the Shamrock Traverse and above Pillar Rock.

We stopped for a snack just before reaching the summit plateau of Pillar, before we went back into the wind and after a short chat we decided that we should curtail the walk and descend the ridge back to Black Sail Pass and back down to Wasdale.

We took the slightly higher path down from the pass and crossed a raging Gatherstone Beck arriving back at Wasdale Head a little after 1pm.

    On the summit of Pillar

  • Yewbarrow

A blustery day today climbing Yewbarrow.

We set off from Overbeck Bridge in the Wasdale Valley and climbed the steep southern end of Yewbarrow. The heavy rain we set off in soon eased to the odd shower, and we made good progress eventually reaching the ridge by Great Door and following the ridge north to the summit of Yewbarrow.

There were good views of Great Gable, although as we reached the summit of Yewbarrow the cloud blew over blocking our views over Wasdale and the Scafells.

From the summit of Yewbarrow we continued north along the ridge to the north summit before dropping down over Stirrup Crag to Dore Head and following the path back above Over Beck back down to the valley.
