An early morning start saw us up Birkhouse Moor in the golden morning light, whilst light mist accompanied stunning views east on a Helvellyn ascent.
Wanting to get away early, we had an early morning start at 8am for Helvellyn, and the stunningly beautiful dawn made it sell worth it. Golden sun struck the side of Sheffield Pike and filled the sky behind Place Fell as we made our way up to Birkhouse Moor, the chill of the morning still in the air. We reached the summit and saw Striding Edge and Catsycam lit up, and only the very summit of Helvellyn in cloud.
As we strode over Striding Edge, the cloud descended and then re-ascended, creating some great effects and suddenly revealing the drops below (not always the best effect for people). Nevertheless, whilst talking some good photos of Red Tarn, we gradually got to the summit, where some light cloud still lingered.
As soon as we began the descent of Swirral Edge, we emerged from beneath the cloud and could see Ullswater stretching away from the summit of Catstycam. From there back to Glenridding we had sunshine, and admired the becks in full flow from the rain the previous day.
