"The humble walker is rarely afforded such an opportunity."
A.W Wainwright

Jack's Rake in the Langdales or Langdale Pikes is one of the most famous scrambling routes in the Lake District, although not a hugely technical route there are high levels of exposure along the route.

A steep rocky ledge that climbs across the face of Pavey Ark, a huge cliff above Stickle Tarn and the Langdale Valley Jack's Rake is a much loved route by many Mountaineers.

Why not let one of our experienced guides take the risk out of this route.

Summits included on this route:

Pavey Ark
700 metres/2297 feet
Thunacar Knott (Optional)
723 metres/2372 feet
Harrison Stickle
736 metres/2415 feet
Pike O'Stickle
709 metres/2326 feet
Loft Crag
682 metres/2238 feet

Jack's Rake is the most famous ascent of Pavey Ark. It is classified as a Grade 1 scramble, but it is within the capability of many walkers, though it does require a head for heights and is considerably harder in bad weather.

The rake starts beneath the East Buttress at the precipice's eastern end, near a large cairn (with a tablet marked 'JWS 1900') immediately north of Stickle Tarn, and then climbs west across the face of the crag.

The rake follows a natural groove in the precipice face and is clearly indicated by several Ash trees. Wainwright wrote that for fellwalkers Jack's Rake is "difficult and awkward", although there is "curiously little sense of exposure, for a comforting parapet of rock accompanies all the steeper parts of the ascent". The summit is a short walk from the top exit of the rake, which is also used as a descent route and by rockclimbers accessing the climbs on the cliff face.

From the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel we will climb by Stickle Gill to Stickle Tarn, here there are wonderful views up to Pavey Ark, the cliffs above the tarn.

Jack's Rake, our route climbs diagonally across these cliffs on a good ledge (it looks a bit more daunting from below than it really is) where a rocky scramble will lead us out to the summit of Pavey Ark.

An easy path now leads to the summit of Harrison Stickle, the most prominent of the Langdale Pikes.

We will then cross Harrison Combe to climb the rocky scramble to the summit of Pike O'Stickle, before descending over Loft Crag back to the New Dungeon Ghyll.

From all the summits we will have great views on a good day over the Langdale Valley to Windermere and across to Bowfell, the Crinkles and the Coniston Fells.
