"This is it: the Mecca of all weary pilgrims in Lakeland."
A.W Wainwright

The Eskdale Valley is one of the most unspoilt areas in the Lake District, although it has the two highest mountains in England at it's head the paths are relatively unspoilt and under walked, this is as wild and remote as you can get in the Lake District.

From Eskdale we will spend two days climbing some of the best mountains that the Lake District has to offer, camping at a secluded spot overlooking the Borrowdale Valley with a stunning view of the sunset over Great Gable (weather permitting!).

Summits included on this route:

Bowfell
902 metres/2959 feet
Esk Pike
885 metres/2904 feet
Allen Crags
785 metres/2575 feet
Great End
910 metres/2986 feet
Scafell Pike
978 metres/3209 feet
Scafell
964 metres/3163 feet
Slight Side
762 metres/2499 feet

"A favourite of all fellwalkers, Bowfell is a mountain that commands attention whenever it appears in view."
A.W Wainwright

From Wha House, in the Eskdale Valley we will follow the Upper Eskdale valley north, this is one of the most unspoilt valleys in the Lake District, this stunning valley is surroounded by four of the six highest mountains in England, all of which we will climb over the next two days.

We will follow Lingcove Beck until a path climbs to Three Tarns, and from there onto the wonderful summit of Bowfell, at 902m the highest point of this first day. From Bowfell the ridge continues too the north west, crossing Ore Gap and climbing to the summit of Esk Pike.

From Esk Pike we descend to Esk Hause and the Allen Crags, just below the Allen Crags we will find tonight's campsite, a sheltered spot and a wonderful view for the night.

After breakfast we will pack up our tents and climb back to Esk Hause, this time turning west to climb through Calf Cove to the summit of Great End, a wonderful viewpoint north over Borrowdale and Derwentwater to Skiddaw and Keswick.

The ridge south leads over the rocky summits of Ill Crag and Broad Crag before descending to Broad Crag Col and the steep final climb to the summit of Scafell Pike, the highest point in England.

Once we are ready to proceed we will descend south to Mickledore, the huge rocky gap below Scafell Crag, a short descent from Mickledore will bring us to the Fox's Tarn path, this climbs steeply alongside the stream to Fox's Tarn, a small pool and spring nestled high on the side of Scafell.

From Fox's Tarn the final climb leads us to the summit of Scafell, after a brief stop to admire thee architecture of Scafell Crag from above we will reach the summit, a wonderful viewpoint.

From Scafell the long southern ridge descends gently over Slight Side and down towards the Eskdale Valley, a nice long gentle descent, perfect for those tired legs.
