The view from Wasdale Head towards Great Gable from Wastwater was recently voted by an ITV television series as the best view in the United Kingdom, this route climbs that famous skyline. Just as amazing though is the reverse view, looking down from the Wasdale face of Great Gable back down to Wast Water with the Irish Sea and the Isle Of Man beyond. On a high note this is also popular amongst the dead, many people have been choosing this amazing mountain with it's stunning views as their final resting place. Why not take advantage of our instructors detailed knowledge of the area and let them take you to all the best viewpoints on the mountain and pick a great route over Great Gable, Green Gable and Kirk Fell. |

Moses Trod, the path running from Wasdale Head over Beck Head and contouring around the fellside to the Graphite Mines above Seathwaite. It is thought that Moses, a worker at either the Seathwaite or Honister Mines was smuggling either illegal whiskey or the valuable graphite to Wasdale Head and onwards to the coast at Ravenglass. |
From the Wasdale Head Inn we will follow the bridleway to Sty Head Pass, the main pass between Wasdale and Borrowdale where we will climb directly to the summit of Great Gable. A short detour from the summit will bring us to the Westmorland Cairn, the best viewpoint over the Wasdale Valley and Wastwater with on a good day the Irish Sea and the Isle Of Man beyond, a good place for some sandwiches! After returning to the summit we will descend North West to Beck Head where we will follow the path climbing over Kirk Fell, taking in both summits before descending south on a good but steep path back to Wasdale Head. Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above. |
