"...a sensational surprise for those who reach the top from 'behind'."
A.W Wainwright

A circuit of the lower fells above Whinlatter makes an enjoyable days walking, covering some of the lesser known fells of the Lake District. Each summit offers a different view of the surrounding mountain country or north over the Solway Coast to Scotland.

Whinlatter Top, above the Whinlatter Pass gives stunning views of the higher fells across the pass and beyond towards Keswick while Barf has a spectacular viewpoint with Bassenthwaite Lake far below and across the lake to Skiddaw, this is the best viewpoint of the Skiddaw Massif.

Lords Seat, the highest point of the day has a good 360° view while Broom Fell offers a great viewpoint of the secluded valley of Wythop and Graystones overlooks the Vale of Lorton.

Summits included on this route:

Whinlatter Top
525 metres/1722 feet
Barf
468 metres/1535 feet
Lords Seat
552 metres/1811 feet
Broom Fell
511 metres/1677 feet
Graystones
456 metres/1496 feet

"Once a fashionable climb, Lord's Seat is now out of favour - yet the heathery top is a pleasant lunching place no less than of yore, retaining the indefinable charm of Lakeland."
A.W Wainwright

From the Darling How car park, on the western side of the Whinlatter Pass we will climb through Aiken Plantation to the summit of Brown How and on along the ridge to Whinlatter Top a fine viewpoint over Whinlatter Pass to Grisedale Pike and across the Vale of Keswick.

We will follow the ridge east descending over Tarbarrel Moss and down to the forest track over Ullister Hill and north circling below Lords Seat to the summit of Barf, the best viewpoint over Bassenthwaite Lake to Skiddaw.

A short climb from Barf will bring us to the summit of Lord's Seat, our highest point of the day.

The ridge north west from Lord's Seat crosses grassy ground to the summit of Broom Fell with it's distinctive summit cairn, along this ridge we will have extensive views over the Wythop Valley and north to the Solway Firth and Scotland.

From Broom Fell we will descend to Widow's Hause, the lowest point on the ridge, before the short climb to Graystones, a remote and quite summit with some stunning views over Cockermouth and the Vale of Lorton.

From Greystones we will descend south, towards Scawgill Bridge where a short detour will bring us through the forest to Spout Force and the path back to the car park.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Equipment Required.

  • The Whinlatter Fells

Another good day today on the Whinlatter Fells.

We set off from the Spout Force car park a little after 10am and followed the track by Darling How climbing up to Brown How and following the ridge to the summit of Whinlatter Top.The views today were great and we had some wonderful views over the North Western Fells and further afield over the Solway Firth to Scotland and east to the Helvellyn range.

From Whinlatter Top we descended by Tarbarrel Moss followed the forest track, stopping for lunch near Ullister Hill before continuing, crossing to the summit of Barf and then climbing up to Lords Seat.

From Lords Seat we followed the ridge crossing Broom Fell and descending to Widow Hause before climbing to Graystones, our final summit of the day. From here we descended the steep southern slope to meet the path to Spout Force and our path back to the cars.

  • Grasmoor, Whiteless Pike and Whiteside

A great day today above Buttermere, from Hause Point we climbed the steep western end of Rannerdale Knotts and followed the ridge east to pick up the path climbing to Whiteless Pike.
The weather was great, although there was quite a strong breeze it was nothing compared to the last few days.
From Whiteless Pike we climbed over Thirdgill Head Man and onto the grassy summit of Wandope, the views were great and we could see as far as the Yorkshire Dales.
From Wandope we crossed Wandope Moss and climbed to the summit of Grasmoor, stopping in the summit shelter for lunch before descending to Coledale Hause and climbing the steep path over Sand Hill to the wonderful summit of Hopegill Head.
From Hopegill Head we followed the ridge down over Whiteside, the great ridge bringing us back down to Lanthwaite Green.

  • Lords Seat & Barf from Braithwaite

A good day above Braithwaite climbing Lords Seat and Barf in wonderful warm weather. The views today were a little hazy but there were still some spectacular sights.
  • Whinlatter Fells

A great day climbing the Whinlatter Fells above Lorton and Briathwaite taking in the summits of Whinlatter Top, Lords Seat, Broom Fell and Graystones.
