Scafell Pike from Wasdale

A near perfect day today climbing Scafell Pike from Wasdale Head.

We set off from the Wasdale Head Inn at 10am and headed up the path climbing towards Lingmell Gill, turning of up onto the Lingmell Breast path and climbing the steep slope to the ladder stile.

After the stile the gradient didn't get much easier for a while but we were soon up over the worst of it and well on our way to the summit of Lingmell.

The views this morning were glorious and it was quite warm in the sun, there was still quite a cold breeze, but we were often out of the wind and it was becoming one of those days where you can never quite get your clothing right, either too hot in the sun and removing layers or to chilly in the wind and putting them back on.

As we approached the summit of Lingmell we stopped to put our crampons on, there were a few sections of quite frozen snow here.

We stopped on the summit of Lingmell to admire the glorious views, up to the summit of Scafell Pike and especially across the valley to the magnificent Great Gable.

After a short lunch stop in some shelter we were off again, crossing Lingmell Col and climbing again up the final push to the summit of Scafell Pike.

We were soon at the summit with glorious views all around, we could see the Isle of Man clearly as well as Scotland and we could also just make out a short section of Northern Ireland in the far distance, the air was so clear today that we could make out buildings on the Isle of Man.

After the obligatory photo stop on the summit we decided to descend by Brown Tongue back to Wasdale, retracing our steps back to Lingmell Col we descended the zig zags towards Hollow Stones, here we were out of the worst of the snow and stopped to take of our crampons.

We descended the old path onto Brown Tongue and were soon down to the crossing over Lingmell Gill taking the path back across Lingmell Breast back down to the valley and the Wasdale Head Inn.
