"the greatest display of natural grandeur in the district, a spectacle of massive strength and savage wildness."
A. Wainwright

Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England and by far our most popular route.

We probably climb Scafell Pike more than almost anyone else (John climbed it 96 times in 2009 and more in 2010) so why not take advantage of this experience and let us take you up the pick of the routes.

Scafell Pike and Scafell are also popular as training for The 3 Peaks Challenge and romantic proposals!

Summits included on this route:

Lingmell (Optional)
800 metres/2625 feet
Scafell Pike
978 metres/3209 feet
Scafell
964 metres/3163 feet
Slight Side (Optional)
762 metres/2499 feet

There are four main routes between Scafell Pike and Scafell, none without their own difficulties, these are:

  1. Broad Stand: (a grade 3 scramble and as such a little more than a walking route)
  2. Lord's Rake: A series of three scree filled gullies climbing below the west buttress of Scafell Crag.
  3. The West Wall Traverse: Following the ledge and then chimney from the top of the first section of Lord's Rake to emerge above the crags.
  4. Fox's Tarn: Of the four routes this is the easiest although it does involve the most descent between the two peaks, the route descends to the Eskdale side of Mickledore down the scree slope before climbing alongside the stream to Fox's Tarn and then up a steep scree slope to the summit of Scafell.

A wonderful route climbing the two highest mountains in England. The walk begins at The Wasdale Head Inn at the head of the valley, an area steeped in mountaineering history, the Fell & Rock Climbing Club was formed in the Inn and some of the earliest rock climbs were recorded on some of the huge crags surrounding the head of the valley.

From Wasdale Head we climb by either the Brown Tongue path or the shoulder of Lingmell to the summit of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

From Scafell Pike we descend to Mickledore and then a little way down the Eskdale side of the ridge to pick up the path climbing alongside the waterfalls (and sometimes through the waterfalls when it's been particularly wet!) to Fox's Tarn and then onto the summit of Scafell, the second highest mountain in England, the quieter of the two summits with wonderful views all around.

From Scafell we descend the old path over Green How down to Brackenclose and the Wasdale Valley.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.
