Welcome to The Lake District Walker
"Not many fells can be described as beautiful, but the word fits Harter Fell."

Although not the highest fell in the area Harter Fell is easily recognisable, it's conical shape makes it stand out on the skyline above Eskdale and it is easily recognisable from the ridge between Scafell and The Crinkles as well as from the Fairfield range to the east. The shapely peak is also a great climb with interest throughout, especially the rocky summit. As well as Harter Fell we will also cover the lesser known neighbours of Green Crag and Hard Knott and descend back to Eskdale via the Hard Knott Roman Fort. |
Summits included on this route: | |
Green Crag |
489 metres/1604 feet
|
Harter Fell |
653 metres/2142 feet
|
Hard Knott |
549 metres/1801 feet
|
"The fell is not only good to look at, but good to climb, interest being well sustained throughout and reaching a climax in the last few feet."

From the Jubilee Bridge in Eskdale we will follow the track along the valley to Low Birker, climbing south by Low Birker Crag ad Tarn Crag to the summit of Green Crag. We will descend east from Green Crag by Long Crag and cross the hollow above Spothow Gill and climb east to meet the path climbing to the summit of Harter Fell, the wonderful rocky summit. The path north west from Harter Fell will bring us below Demming Crag, to Hardknott Pass from where we will climb to the summit of Border End and then the summit of Hard Knott. After returning to the pass we will descend west on a good path down to the Roman Fort and back to Jubilee Bridge.
