"For sustained interest, impressive crag scenery, beautiful views, and a most delightful arrangement of tarns and rocky peaks, this short mountain excursion ranks with the very best."
A Wainwright

Haystacks, despite being less than 2000 ft in height is held in high regard by almost all who know the Lake District. It's summit ridge, covered in rocky outcrops and tarns is a wonderful excursion from the Buttermere Valley and Innominate Tarn, half way along the summit ridge with it's outstanding views over Great Gable and Pillar was chosen by guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright as the spot where his ashes would be scattered after his death.

The two main tarns on this ridge, Innominate Tarn and Blackbeck Tarn are both outstanding, with wonderful views from both, possibly the best being from just above Blackbeck Tarn with the summing view looking over the tarn and down to the valley below with booth Crummock Water and Buttermere in view below.

On a good day the view from the rocky summit of Haystacks is breathtaking, with a clear view north west along the Buttermere Valley to the Solway Coast and across the Solway to Scotland.
