- The Langdale Pikes
The view from the eastern shore of Windermere between Windermere and Ambleside is dominated by the distant skyline of jagged rocky mountains to the East, these are the Langdales or Langdale Pikes.
This is one of the most famous views in the Lake District.
Let our guides take you over a well tried route taking in the best parts of these fells with spectacular views back down the Langdale Valley back towards Windermere.
Summits included on this route:
Pavey Ark700 metres / 2297 feet
Thunacar Knott723 metres / 2372 feet
Harrison Stickle736 metres / 2415 feet
Pike O'Stickle709 metres / 2326 feet
Loft Crag682 metres / 2238 feet
Starting at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel we will climb alongside Stickle Gill to Stickle Tarn. This is a steep but easily manageable path that has stunning views over the Langdale Valley. From Stickle Tarn we get our first clear look up at Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark, part of the Langdale Pikes. Pavey Ark is especially impressive, comprising of the cliffs above the tarn. Circling the tarn we climb onto the summit point of Pavey Ark.
Crossing over to Thunacar Knott we follow an easy path that leads towards the summit of Harrison Stickle, the most prominent of the Langdale Pikes.
We will then cross Harrison Combe to climb the rocky scramble to the summit of Pike O'Stickle. Beneath this is a point of local historic interest, the Langdale Neolithic axe forge. From this summit we begin descending over Loft Crag back down to the New Dungeon Ghyll.
On a clear day with good visibility all of the summits ascended offer great views over the Langdale Valley to Windermere and across to Bowfell, the Crinkles and Coniston Old Man.

Challenging but fun Review by Louise
Overall Experience I walked this route with 7other walkers and our guide James. I did not know any of them at the start but we had a really good day and supported each other over the challenging parts. James was a super guide, he kept us all together and shared lots of information about the route and the surrounding fells. A great walk and the 8 strangers now friends finished their day sharing drinks and ice-creams at the pub - perfect! (Posted on 24/04/2024)

First but definitely not last group walk!! Review by sarah
Overall Experience For a single girl, short on time and who can't read maps, this group walk was absolutely ideal! Robert led the walk which included some scrambling too - a first for me and great fun. I was introduced to the challenge of bagging as many "Wainwrights" as possible and, given the good weather, we added-on High Raise, which meant the walk was about 6.5 hours in total. We had the pleasure of 2 lovely dogs all day - Alfie and Otto were great company, as was the entire group and our leader Robert. Finished off with a pint around an outdoor fire at the pub and a Sunday roast at the walkers bar in the new dungeon hotel. Perfection! (Posted on 02/03/2024)

Fantastic day out Review by Annette
Overall Experience Meet our guide John at the car park where he had crampons and ice axe available to bring in case we needed it, as it was quite a bit of snow in the mountains. Well organised, very friendly and experienced guides. John was very patient with the different level of walkers in the group and made sure everyone was ok. A beautiful, snow filled day for me and my dog, and great value for money. will walk again this Friday. thank you (Posted on 24/11/2016)

Langdale Pikes Review by Nicky Simmons
Overall Experience I live in the Lake District now, but instead of walking alone I like to have the reassurance of a guide so that I can enjoy the day exploring fells that I am not familiar with. I have just completed the Langdale Pikes with Rick. It was the second guided walk I have done with him. He is a fantastic guide, relaxed and easygoing. Thank you very much for a very memorable day. I have now completed 32 Wainwrights and I am sure I will use LDW for many more in the future. (Posted on 12/05/2016)

Fantastic day climbing The Langdale Pikes Review by Brett Radley
Overall Experience My son and I had a fantastic day climbing The Langdale Pikes. We booked to join the scheduled walk and as it turned out we had John all to ourselves. Without going overboard the day was marvelous. The weather was perfect and the snowline began just above Stickle Tarn. my son bounded up and down the mountain but I was a fair bit slower and less confident. John was with me all the way, introducing us to crampons and ice axes at just the right time. Being unfamiliar to the area, joining The Lake District Walker meant I didn't have to concern myself with map reading, or worry about any safety aspects. In addition we got a taste of the expert knowledge that John has of the area, it's geology and history. I can't think of a better way to enjoy the mountains and look forward to joining The Lake District Walker on our next visit. (Posted on 19/02/2016)

We do not have a set minimum age for this event, however, you know your child best, therefore please bear in mind this is an open event of varying ages, if you are not confident your child can complete this event then hiring a private guide could be a more suitable option.

We plan to walk whatever the weather, unless it is dangerous to do so.
Mountain weather can be a little unpredictable, but we do keep an eye on the forecasts leading up to walks, should the forecast mean that the walk is not possible then we will contact you as soon as we have the forecast and offer you the following options:
- A more suitable walk on the same date taking into consideration the weather conditions
- A transfer to the same walk on another date
- A full refund
Question:
Are dogs allowed on this walk?
Answers:

Yes, dogs are allowed on all our walks.
However we do cross farmland and common land where animals will be grazing, there will be large sections of the walk, if not all, where dogs will be required to be on a lead.
