Harter Fell (Mardale)

Grid Reference: NY 45970 09332
Height: 778 metres/2552 feet

"The ground suddenly collapses in a tremendous wall of crags, falling swiftly to the head of Mardale amongst wild and romantic surroundings."
A.Wainwright

Between the valleys of Kentmere, Mardale and Longsleddale lies Harter Fell, a broad grassy summit. To the south a long gentle ridge descends over Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts, to the east Gatesgarth Pass divides Harter Fell from Branstree while to the west Nan Bield Pass divides Harter Fell from the main mass of the High Street range.

To the north of Harter Fell steep crags descend towards Mardale, much good scrambling can be found on these crags and in the damp gullies, with good winter climbing during particularly good winter conditions.
