From the Wasdale side of Scafell rises the huge Scafell Crag, several buttresses of rock climbing to near the summit of Scafell, between the rocks lie a few good routes. Some are too technical for a walking group but some make a great day out on the fells when combined with a circuit over Scafell and Scafell Pike.

Why not let our fully qualified instructors take you from Wasdale on this amazing route, using their experience to pick the path.

The Route:
A wonderful route climbing the two highest mountains in England. The walk begins at The Wasdale Head Inn at the head of the valley, an area steeped in mountaineering history, the Fell & Rock Climbing Club was formed in the Inn and some of the earliest rock climbs were recorded on some of the huge crags surrounding the head of the valley.

From Wasdale Head we follow the path across the fields to Brackenclose where we will climb by Lingmell Gill to Hollow Stones, a huge amphitheatre between the summits of Scafell and Scafell Pike, a path from here leads onto Lords Rake, a series of stony gullies leading out to easier ground beyond where a short walk will bring us to the summit of Scafell.

From Scafell we descend a steep path to Fox's Tarn where a path then leads below the East Buttress of Scafell Crag climbing to Mickledore, the shoulder between Scafell and Scafell Pike, a short climb now leads to the summit of Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England.

There are several great routes leading back to Wasdale Head, our favourite is to descend alongside Piers Gill on a good path descending above the huge ravine and back to the valley.

Directions:
From Cockermouth: Follow the A5086 south past Egremont and continue to the village of Gosforth, turning off the main road and driving through the village, turn left at the mini roundabout and left at the next fork. Continue on this road and follow the signs for Wasdale Head and Wast Water. When a junction is reached on the shores of Wastwater turn left and follow this to Wasdale Head. A large car park will be seen on a field to the right of the road just before The Wasdale Head Inn, this is the best place to park and walk to the Inn where we will meet.
