The summit of Great Gable is strewn with boulders and the highest point marked by a rock outcrop set with a cairn. There is a plaque set on the summit rock commemorating those members of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club who died in the First World War; an annual memorial service is held here on Remembrance Sunday. The club bought a large area of land including Great Gable and donated it to the National Trust in memory of these members, and the plaque was dedicated in 1924 by Geoffrey Winthrop Young in front of 500 people. |
From Honister Pass we will climb south following the steep that above the slate mines to the summit of Grey Knotts. The ridge then leads south west crossing the gentle plateau to the summit of Brandreth before descending a little to cross Gillercombe Head where a gentle pull will bring up onto the summit of Green Gable with wonderful views over Great Gable and west towards Buttermere and Ennerdale. From Green Gable we will cross Windy Gap before climbing to the summit of Great Gable. Our descent will be by Beck Head, dropping down the northern slopes to meet the Moses Trod path which skirts round the western flanks of the ridge before dropping down to the Drum House and following the old tramway back to Honister Pass.
