A wonderful lower fell walk in the heart of the Lake District, taking in one of the most famous summits and one of the great viewpoints. This short walk really has it all, mountains, lakes, history and some stunning views.

A great shorter walk suitable for a half day or an evenings excursion during the summer months Helm Crag really has something for everyone.

From Grasmere we will follow Easdale Road out of the village, passing Lancrigg, once home to a famous explorer but nowadays a well renowned hotel and restaurant. The path leaves the valley floor and climbs up through the old quarry workings on the southern flank of Helm Crag, before easier ground above the quarries takes us up by White Crag and onto the grassy slopes towards the summit of Helm Crag.

A few rocky steps are crossed before we reach the rocky summit of the fell, toped by the Howitzer, the highest point of Helm Crag and a grade 1 scramble to get to the summit. Don't worry though if you don't fancy climbing the rock Wainwright himself never made it to the top of the Howitzer!

From the summit of Helm Crag we follow the ridge to the north west, dropping down to Bracken Hause, here a new path descend north from the ridge, zig zagging down the fellside at an easy gradient to the wooden footbridge crossing Green Burn near to the waterfalls.

A short walk down the valley here brings us to Helm Side and the lane back into Grasmere.

Directions

Grasmere can easily be found off the A591 between Ambleside and Keswick. Follow the signs into the village and park in one of the many car parks, we will meet in the centre of the village on the corner of Easdale Road, opposite Sam Reid´s Bookshop.

Bus Services

Ambleside is well served by buses, the main bus stop is100m away from the meet point.

The 555 bus runs between Kendal and Keswick, passing through Windermere and Grasmere.

The 599 runs regularly through the summer months from Bowness, Windermere and Grasmere.

No, there is no minimum number for this event, if 1 person books then it will go ahead

We do not have a set minimum age for this event, however, you know your child best, therefore please bear in mind this is an open event of varying ages, if you are not confident your child can complete this event then hiring a private guide could be a more suitable option.

As this is an open event all under 18's must be accompanied by an adult.

We plan to walk whatever the weather, unless it is dangerous to do so.

Mountain weather can be a little unpredictable, but we do keep an eye on the forecasts leading up to walks, should the forecast mean that the walk is not possible then we will contact you as soon as we have the forecast and offer you the following options:
- A more suitable walk on the same date taking into consideration the weather conditions
- A transfer to the same walk on another date
- A full refund

Yes, dogs are allowed on all our walks.

However we do cross farmland and common land where animals will be grazing, there will be large sections of the walk, if not all, where dogs will be required to be on a lead.
