Welcome to The Lake District Walker
"Few fells are so well favoured as Place Fell for appraising neighbouring heights. It occupies an exceptionally good position in the curve of Ullswater, in the centre of a great bowl of hills; it's summit commands a very beautiful and impressive panorama." |

Place Fell on the eastern shores of Ullswater is a wonderful viewpoint over much of the high land surrounding Ullswater, and when combined with a walk along the lakeshore path, along the eastern shores of Ullswater, makes a great shorter days walking. The fellside leading to the summit of Place Fell is varied, from woodlands on the lower slopes over the bracken and heather covered slopes to the rocky outcrops around the summits and the northern ridges there is always something of interest. |

"On a first visit to Patterdale, Place Fell should be an early objective, for no other viewpoint gives such an appreciation of the design of this lovely corner of Lakeland." |

From Patterdale we will climb the track behind Rookings, climbing to Boredale Hause, the pass between Patterdale and Martindale. A short exploration here on Boredale Hause will reveal 'Chapel in the Hause' the remains of a 5th century chapel thought to have been built by St Patrick and dedicated to St Martin of Tours. From Boredale Hause we will climb north up Steel Edge to the summit of Place Fell, a wonderful viewpoint. From Place Fell we will descend north over the Knight, and either descend along the Hare Shaw path or descend a little further north by Low Birk Fell and down by the Scalehow Force waterfalls and down to meet the lakeshore path, returning to Patterdale by Silver Bay.
