"This is Rannerdale Knotts, a mountain in miniature, and a proud one. Not even Gable has witnessed a real battle! And, what's more, our side won!!" |
A Wainwright
|
The lowly ridge of Rannerdale Knotts rises above Buttermere and Crummock Water, enclosing the picturesque valley of Rannerdale from the main valley, making a fine low ridge, connected to the foot of the Whiteless Pike ridge just above the village of Buttermere.
The Rannerdale Valley was the setting for a historic battle, where Norman invaders were ambushed and repelled by the English. Rannerdale is now known as the Bluebell Valley, each year in sprint the valley is carpeted with bluebells, visible from the surrounding summits.
