Pavey Ark
|
"In an area where crags and precipices abound, here is the giant of them all, and, scenically, it is the best." |
A.W Wainwright

The view of Pavey Ark across Stickle Tarn is one of the most dramatic in the Lake District, steep cliffs climbing up from behind the tarn to the heights above, there are obvious routes to either side of the crag, but for a walker at first sight it looks impossible to ascend to the summit across the crag without some rock climbing. There are however routes up the face of the crag which only involve moderate scrambling, the most famous and best of these is Jack's Rake, the diagonal fault climbing across the face of the crag, an airy but thrilling route almost directly to the summit.
For those not requiring the thrill of Jack's Rake then the North Rake to the right hand side of the crag is the best option, climbing easily just behind the right hand skyline.
A circuit of the Langdale Pikes is often started with the ascent of Pavey Ark.
