To the east of Helvellyn two rocky ridges descend, Swirral Edge to Catstycam and the more famous Striding Edge to Birkhouse Moor. The view from the summit of Birkhouse Moor towards Helvellyn is wonderfully framed with Striding Edge to the left of Red Tarn and Swirral Edge and Catstycam to the right hand side.

The eastern ridge, above Glenridding is a delightful climb, by Lanty's Tarn and the lower peak of Keldas on grassy paths away from the busy paths to Striding Edge.
