Sheffield Pike

Sheffield Pike

Grid Reference: NY 36910 18178
Height: 675 metres/2215 feet

"It soars abruptly between the valleys of Glenridding and Glencoyne and it presents to each a continuous fringe of steep crags."
A.W Wainwright

The ridge descending east from Stybarrow Dodd towards Ullswater changes in appearance around Glencoyne Head, above this point grassy slopes descend gently, but below the ridge narrows and becomes a heathery ridge covered in rocky outcrops, this is Sheffield Pike, continuing down to the lakeshore over Glenridding Dodd.

The subsidiary summit of Heron Pike is well worth a visit, a short distance east from the true summit it offers some wonderful views over Ullswater below.

The lead mines on the western slopes of Sheffield Pike which caused Wainwright so much pain in 1955 are nowadays derelict and the area is turning back to nature, not without much of interest though and a walk amongst these derelict mines offers many a worthwhile detour.
