Helvellyn from Wythburn

Helvellyn from Wythburn

"It is, as a rule a very friendly giant. If it did not inspire affection would it's devotees return to it so often."
A. Wainwright

The western flank of Helvellyn descends gently at first before dropping more steeply to the shores of Thirlmere, there are several routes climbing Helvellyn from Thirlmere, our pick is the route from Wythburn Church at the southern end of the lake.

From Wythburn Church the path climbs steeply through the trees to emerge above the trees by Combe Gill, climbing up onto the Birk Side shoulder, from here on the views are tremendous with expansive views from Coniston Old Man in the Southern Fells to Skiddaw in the Northern Fells.

Once Birk Side has been reached the gradient begins to ease, a good new path zigzags up the fellside until the summit of Helvellyn is in view, skirting below the summit of Nethermost Pike until the main ridge is reached at Swallow Scarth. Here the views to the east take precedence, with a wonderful view across to Striding Edge and down to Ullswater.

The final climb up to the summit of Helvellyn is an easy slope on a good path, passing the memorial plaque immortalizing the landing, in 1926 of an Avro Gosport by John Leeming and Bert Hinkler, before reaching the summit of Helvellyn.

Our route from Helvellyn takes us south along the main ridge, returning to Swallow Scarth before climbing to the summit of Nethermost Pike, here there are wonderful views north over Helvellyn and Striding Edge, and then continuing south along the ridge brings us to the summit of Dollywaggon Pike, one of the best summits on the Helvellyn ridge, jutting out to the east of the ridge a little giving us some unparalleled views over Ruthwaite Cove and the Grisedale Valley.

From Dollywaggon Pike we will descend west, gentle grassy slopes bring us down onto Willie Wife Moor, a flat grassy plateau where we will pick up a path descending towards Dunmail Raise over Reggle Knott, one of the best viewpoints over Thirlmere.

An old mine track takes us down from Reggle Knott onto the path descending back to the woods above Thirlmere and the forest track back to Wythburn Church.
