Helvellyn Ridge Walk

Helvellyn Ridge Walk

"The Helvellyn range is extremely massive, forming a tremendous natural barrier from north to south between the deep troughs of the Thirlmere and Ullswater valleys."
A. Wainwright

The long north to south ridge encompassing the summit of Helvellyn gives a wonderful long day in the fells, covering 9 Wainwright summits along the length of the ridge from Grisedale Tarn to Threlkeld.

This glorious ridge when walked from south to north makes an enjoyable day on some of the highest fells in the Lake District with good walking surfaces throughout.

The Lake District Walker will provide transport from Threlkeld to the start of the walk at Dunmail Raise, from here we will walk back along the ridge to Threlkeld.

From Dunmail Raise we will follow the path, climbing alongside Raise Beck, a good path making height easily and we will soon be on the shores of Grisedale Tarn where a new path leads up the southern slopes of Dollywaggon Pike.

Once on the summit of the wonderful Dollywaggon Pike the hardest part of the day is behind us and ahead of us is an easy stroll along the tops with stunning views throughout.

Nethermost Pike is a gentle walk along the ridge, turning off the main path to reach the true summit with the wonderful views north to Helvellyn and Striding Edge. The final climb to the summit of Helvellyn is simple and we will soon be at the third highest summit on the Lake District with glorious 360° views across the entire Lake District and beyond.

From Helvellyn we will continue north, crossing Helvellyn Lower Man and descending above Brown Cove to the summit of White Side and then along the ridge to Raise, our 5th summit of the day.

Now the walking is easier, with grass and newly made paths underfoot as we climb up onto Stybarrow Dodd, following the ridge north over the grassy summits of Watson's Dodd to Great Dodd and Clough Head, our final summit of the day, with stunning views north over Threlkeld to Blencathra.

The path drops down from the summit of Clough Head to White Pike before dropping down onto the Old Coach Road and an easy descent into Threlkeld.
