Branstree is a remote fell, high above Mardale Head and Haweswater, a unfrequented hill above the Gatesgarth Pass. The busier hills to the west around Kentmere and High Street get the majority of the visitors to the area leaving these hills, the western extremities of the Lake District a much more tranquil pace where the walker can go for a whole day without seeing another walker.
Mosedale Cottage, at the head of the Mosedale Valley is now famous as the location for the film Withnail and I.
The stone pillar near the summit of Branstree is one of several similar pillar erected to survey the area during the construction of the Haweswater Aqueduct, used to plot the line of the aqueduct taking the water from Haweswater to Manchester.
