The long northern ridge of Thornthwaite Crag descends gently over a fine grassy spine, with steep crags to either side to the summit of Gray Crag, enclosed by Hayeswater to the east and Pasture Beck to the west.

Gray Crag is a prominent view from the fells to the north, a dramatic sight from the area above Angle Tarn the shapely ridge looks far more imposing than it actually is upon closer inspection.

As with many summits it is well worth taking a few steps to either side of the summit cairn, stunning views down to Hayeswater are just a few paces away as are impressive views over Pasture Bottom to the west. A short walk south from the summit reveals a wonderful view of Windermere, seen through Thresthwaite Mouth.
