Coledale - The valley of the charcoal burners |
A wonderful ridge route from Lanthwaite Green to Braithwaite. After meeting at Braithwaite we will drive to Lanthwaite Green, above Crummock Water, from here we will follow the path up Whin Benn climbing to the two summits of Whiteside, the first with spectacular views over Crummock Water and the Buttermere Fells as well as Grasmoor End, the second slightly higher summit shows us the route ahead, the great narrow ridge of Whiteside, not quite a scramble, but easy walking along a wonderful crest to the rocky summit of Hopegill Head. From Hopegill Head we will descend a little, circling above Hobcarton Crag to climb by Hobcarton Head to the summit of Grisedale Pike with it's wonderful views across the northern Lake District. A good ridge descends from the summit of Grisedale Pike, rocky at first but then descending onto the grassy ridge over Kinn before descending easily to the road and Braithwaite. Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above. |
