"Blencathra is one of the grandest objects in Lakeland. And one of the best known."
A. Wainwright

One of the finest mountains in the Lake District, Blencathra towers above the village of Threlkeld. The dramatic southern aspect of Blencathra rises in a series of rocky ridges and ravines.

All of the ridges provide wonderful routes to the summit of Blencathra, these include:

Halls Fell Ridge
A fine rocky ridge rising above Threlkeld and climbing directly to the summit cairn of Blencathra. A wonderful scramble that can be made as easy as needed.

Sharp Edge
The most famous ridge on Blencathra and second only to Striding Edge on Helvellyn in terms of notoriety. A wonderful sharp edge which requires some scrambling and a high level of exposure. This is a serious undertaking in poor weather.

Scales Fell
A long gentle grassy ridge climbing gently above the village of Scales, a wonderful walk with wonderful views south over the high country and also over Sharp Edge, seen across Scales Tarn.

Doddick Fell
A fine narrow ridge that climbs to meet the higher section of the Scales Fell Ridge, narrow but without any difficulty.

Gategill Fell
The least frequented of the Blencathra ridges, Gategill Fell climbs steeply above Threlkeld, the very steep southern flank puts most off climbing Gategill Fell, but those who do are rewarded with the fine viewpoint of Knott Halloo, a small rocky turret.
