Carrock Fell probably has more historical interest than any other fell in the Lake District, for thousands of years it has been lived on, defended and worked by man. On the summit lie the remains of an early hill fort, the walls are still evident as are several small battlements on the fellside to the east. Over the years since the fort fell out of use the fellside has been heavily mined, Many metals and minerals have been mined from the slopes of Carrock Fell, Carrock Mine is especially well know for it's supplies of Wolfram.
The mines now derelict the steep western slopes are now the domain of the rock climber, the wonderful dark Gabbro rock, similar to the rock on the Cullin on the Isle of Skye, is perfect for climbers and the small outcrops on the fellside are popular with climbers.
The western ridge of Carrock Fell links the mountain with the surrounding fells, easy grassy walks lead to the summits of High Pike and Knott.
