Great Borne
|
"The fell is a familiar sight to West Cumbrians: From Ennerdale Water it rise as a massive buttress to the High Stile ridge." |
A Wainwright
|
The westernmost summit on the High Stile ridge Great Bourne is more of an Ennerdale fell, rising steeply above the Ennerdale Valley, a rominent sight from this side of the ridge, whereas from the Buttermere Valley Great Bourne is hidden from view.
Known locally as Herdus, deriving from it's former name of Herdhouse.
A pleasant ascent can be made from Bowness, in the Ennerdale Valley where the climb over Bowness Knott is particularly enjoyable.
