Beginners Navigation Training on Silver How

So, today was my first time running this beginners navigation training course and what a fantastic day it has been. The forecast for the day consisted of little if any rain and strong winds in the afternoon, which were very strong at times, however it didn't effect the performance of the navigator that was with me.

The day started in Elterwater at 10am and with a brief introduction of the day we headed up the lane towards Red Bank, turning off the road to follow the path towards Huntingstile Crag, climbing above High Close, which offered some brief patches of sunshine.

Silver How provides a brilliant navigation arena to practice and perfect navigation skills, the client was extremely satisfied with her navigation and it was rewarding seeing her progression throughout the day. We spent the morning using specific features along the ridge by Dow Bank and below Spedding Crag before climbing up Megs Gill, which was followed by a panoramic view of the Langdales whilst eating lunch.

After Lunch the difficulty of navigation was increased which challenged the client but managed very well indeed. After using small contours around Swinescar Pike we traveled along the path just west of the tarns using small contour features on the west side of Megs Gill.

Following a successful day we headed back towards Elterwater with the introduction of Naismith's (1892) timings along the ridge back east before descending back to the roadside above Walthwaite Bottom, back to the car.  On the decent we could see the beautiful Langdales below the cloud, which finished the day off perfectly.
