Loadpot Hill
|
"There is a haunting attractiveness about these far-flung rolling expanses." |
A.Wainwright

The main High Street ridge reaches it's final summit at Loadpot Hill, north from here the land descends, gently, towards Penrith and the Eden. This broad grassy summit is the final high ground of the High Street Roman Road. A lower ridge does continue to the north west, above Ullswater, but this is a separate ridge.
To the north of Loadpot Hill the gentle slopes have much of interest, standing stones and stone circles can be found here amongst the bracken, some easier to locate than others, the most notable of these ancient monuments is The Cockpit, above Pooley Bridge.
The remains of Lowther House can still be made out, just to the south of the summit, all that remains of this shooting lodge is the remains of the chimney stack.
