Thornthwaite Crag
|
"Occupying a commanding position overlooking four valleys, Thornthwaite Crag is one of the better-known fells east of Kirkstone, owing not a little of it's fame to it's tall pillar of stones, a landmark for miles around." |
A.Wainwright

Thornthwaite Crag is one of the most prominent peaks on the skyline to the east of the Patterdale Valley, not the least for it's high cairn 'The Beacon' at it''s summit which is large enough to be seen from a long distance.
The name 'The Beacon' is probably a recent mistake, the pillar of rock is just a spectacular summit cairn, and the tern 'The Beacon' derives from the fact that there would have been a beacon on the summit of Thornthwaite Crag when the Roman Road crossing High Street was in use.
