Red Pike (Buttermere)

Red Pike (Buttermere)

Grid Reference: NY 16054 15453
Height: 755 metres/2477 feet

"Red Pike is deservedly a popular climb: the way to it is both interesting and beautiful, the summit is a graceful cone without complications, the cairn being exactly at the head of the path; and the view is excellent."
A Wainwright

Red Pike, part of the high ridge that dominates the skyline above Buttermere is the most popular summit on the ridge, the direct path up from Buttermere Village via Bleaberry Tarn is the easiest and shortest path to any of the Buttermere Fells.

A far more interesting path climbs Red Pike from the west, climbing first to Scale Force, a wonderful waterfall nestled high on the northern slopes, out of sight from the valley. The path then climbs steeply above the waterfalls before eventually emerging onto Lingcombe Edge, a fine ridge climbing to the summit of Red Pike with spectacular views throughout.

The red colour of Red Pike is provided by the rock Syenite, a coarse rock, similar to Granite, and can be seen regularly on the surface when walking on Red Pike.
