Yewbarrow
|
"Many mountains have been described as having the shape of the inverted hull of a boat, but none of them more fittingly than Yewbarrow, which extends along the west side of Wasdale for two miles as a high and narrow ridge." |

Yewbarrow, above the valley of Wasdale is a prominent viewpoint when seen from the shores of Wastwater, the steep sided fell has a stunning profile when seen from this side of the valley. From Wasdale Head the shape is somewhat different, the long flat summit ridge towers above the Wasdale Head Inn.
The shape of the mountain makes the ascent steep from all directions, the two main paths both mean a little easy scrambling will be required. The path directly up from Overbeck Bridge climbs steeply up the grass slope before a steep scree slope is reached and must be climbed to reach the summit ridge. From Dore Head at the northern end of the fell a short but easy scramble on good rock over Stirrup Crag brings the walker to the north summit and the fine ridge leading to the true summit of Yewbarrow.
the views from the summit make the climb worthwhile, fine views over the head of Wasdale are remarkable, particularly of Great Gable and the Scafell range.
