"No excuse is good enough for missing this easy walk, which is delightful throughout." |
A.W Wainwright on Walla Crag
|
A circuit of the high fells to the south east of Keswick is an enjoyable shorter day in the Lake District Mountains, the views from summits such as Walla Crag and Bleaberry Fell are magnificent and show Derwent Water off to it's best. The descent by Ashness Bridge and across the terraced path above Derwent Water is also a joy. |

"This well known view has earned it's popularity not by it's extensiveness but by the variety and charm of many nearby features." |

From the Great Wood Car Park we will climb through Great Wood to Cat Gill, climbing the good path alongside the gill with great views over Derwent Water behind us. As we emerge from the gill we will follow the edge of the crags to the summit of Walla Crag, one of the best viewpoints in the Lake District. From Walla Crag the path climbs gently over good ground to Bleaberry Fell, with it's magnificent views over Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite Lake. The ridge south from Bleaberry Fell brings us to High Seat, a great viewpoint east to Helvellyn and south over the high fells to the Scafells. The descent to the west of High Seat brings us down to Ashness Bridge, the famous viewpoint over Derwentwater and Skiddaw, following the terraced path back to Cat Gill and Great Wood. Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List Tab above. |
