Welcome to The Lake District Walker
"There is a remarkable vista, like looking along the sights of a gun, through the heart of the district to the low Windermere fells in the extreme south." |

The remote heather covered hills to the north of the Skiddaw massif offer a different type of walking to much of central Lakeland. The gentle slopes well away from the crowds of the more famous fells are more similar to some of the heights in the Yorkshire Dales or the Pennines. The views from these fells although not extensive to the south, except from the summit of Great Calva, offer great views to the north west over the Solway Firth to Scotland. |
Summits included on this route: | |
Great Cockup |
526 metres/1726 feet
|
Meal Fell |
550 metres/1804 feet
|
Great Sca Fell |

|
Knott |
710 metres/2329 feet
|

"Most regular visitors to Lakeland will be familiar with the outline of Great Calva even though they may never in their wanderings have been within miles of it." |

From Orthwaite we will climb the western shoulder of Great Cockup passing the old grouse butts as we climb to the summit from where a short descent will bring us to Trusmadoor, a narrow valley between Great Cockup and Meal Fell. The path leads us on up the eastern side of Trusmadoor climbing to the summit of Meal Fell and then to the summit of Great Sca Fell. A good track leads south from Great Sca Fell climbing over heathery slopes to the summit of Knott, the highest peak of the day. The path south west from Knott crosses a broad col before climbing again onto the summit ridge of Great Calva, a fine viewpoint south with views the full length of the Lake District. A short stroll west along the fence-line will take us to the summit of Little Calva and we will descend the western slopes to cross Hause Gill and meet the track back to Orthwaite. Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above. |
