“Blencathra is one of the grandest objects in Lakeland. And one of the best known”
A Wainwright
Blencathra is one of the most prominent summits on the Lake District skyline, it's wonderful ridges can be awe inspiring when seen from below. This route avoids the narrow Sharp Edge ridge while still taking in some of the best mountain scenery that the area has to offer before descending north over the seldom walked summit of Mungrisdale Common.
“The supreme feature of Blencathra, the one that invests the mountain with special grandeur, is the imposing southern front, a remarkable example of the effect of elemental natural forces”
A Wainwright
We will climb from Threlkeld directly to the summit of Blencathra via the wonderful Halls Fell ridge one of the best ridges on Blencathra.
From the summit of Blencathra our route takes us north, over the subsidiary summit of Atkinson Pike before descending north over the summit of Mungrisdale Common.
The rocky ridges of our ascent on the southern slopes of Blencathra are now replaced with gentle heathery slopes as we descend to the remote summit of Mungrisdale Common.
From Mungrisdale Common we will descend to the west, dropping down to meet the track below that will take us back to Threlkeld by the Blencathra Centre.
Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.
