“Fairfield, a grand mountain with grand satellites in support”
A Wainwright
The ever popular summit of Fairfield has much more to offer than just the splendid Fairfield Horseshoe route, the eastern flanks above Patterdale also give great ridges and rugged scenery and the slopes above Grasmere also give a wonderful route, covering the summits of Stone Arthur, Great Rigg and Seat Sandal.
The summits of Stone Arthur and Seat Sandal give some of the best views over the Vale of Grasmere and the Easdale Fells and the descent down the southern shoulder of Seat Sandal with Grasmere stretching out ahead is a delight.
“Mention should be made of the excellent turf on this wide top: weary feet will judge it delightful”
A Wainwright
From Grasmere we will climb the western shoulder of Great Rigg, climbing to the rocky outcrop of Stone Arthur, a great viewpoint over the valley below and across to Easdale Tarn and the fells surrounding it.
From Stone Arthur the grassy ridge continues climbing to the summit of Great Rigg and onwards to the magnificent summit plateau of Fairfield, with it's striking views east over Patterdale to High Street and the Pennines.
We will descend west from Fairfield to Grisedale Hause, above Grisedale Tarn and climb the short slope to the summit of Seat Sandal.
Although the views from the summit of Seat Sandal are great just a short walk from the summit brings us to an even better viewpoint with stunning views over Grasmere and south to Morecambe Bay beyond, we will descend the southern shoulder of Seat Sandal, keeping these views in front of us the whole descent, crossing the fields back to Grasmere.
Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.
