Helvellyn, the third highest mountain in England makes a wonderful extension to the Coast to Coast route, taking in the summits of Dollywaggon Pike, Nethermost Pike and Helvellyn before descending over the wonderful Striding Edge ridge to Patterdale.

As an alternative Swirral Edge can also be used for descent.

From Grasmere we climb along the Coast to Coast path, climbing from Mill Bridge at the northern end of the village up onto the Little Tongue path, this leads up to Grisedale Hause and then drops to Grisedale Tarn.

From Grisedale Tarn a good path leads up to the summit of Dollywaggon Pike, a wonderful top with great views over the Grisedale Valley and north along the ridge to Helvellyn.

From Dollywaggon Pike we follow the ridge north, crossing over Nethermost Pike and then climbing up to the summit of Helvellyn, the third highest summit in England and one of the best viewpoints over the Lake District.

From Helvellyn our route crosses to the south east, past the Charles Gough memorial plaque, and dropping down the steep slope to the start of Striding Edge.

The wonderful scramble along Striding Edge takes us to High Spying How and the easier ground as we descend along the ridge to 'The Hole In The Wall' and the footpath down into the Grisedale Valley.

From Thornhow in the Grisedale Valley it's a short walk along easy tracks to the Patterdale Hotel.

A great walk in it's own right this route is the more adventurous alternative for the Grasmere to Patterdale leg of the Coast to Coast route.

Grasmere can easily be found off the A591 between Ambleside and Keswick. Follow the signs into the village and park in one of the many car parks, we will meet in the centre of the village on the corner of Easdale Road, opposite Sam Reid´s Bookshop.

Bus Services

Ambleside is well served by buses, the main bus stop is100m away from the meet point.

The 555 bus runs between Kendal and Keswick, passing through Windermere and Grasmere.

The 599 runs regularly through the summer months from Bowness, Windermere and Grasmere.

We plan to walk whatever the weather, unless it is dangerous to do so.

Mountain weather can be a little unpredictable, but we do keep an eye on the forecasts leading up to walks, should the forecast mean that the walk is not possible then we will contact you as soon as we have the forecast and offer you the following options:
- A more suitable walk on the same date taking into consideration the weather conditions
- A transfer to the same walk on another date
- A full refund

Yes, dogs are allowed on all our walks.

However we do cross farmland and common land where animals will be grazing, there will be large sections of the walk, if not all, where dogs will be required to be on a lead.

There are sections of this walk across rough ground and boulders and as such this walk may not be suitable for all dogs.
