"Grasmoor is a very formidable object above Lanthwaite, it's tiered crags seeming almost impregnable. The direct climb, up the angle between the north and west faces, is a continuously steep and rough scramble and a severe test in route selection. On the whole, however, the climb is probably less difficult than the north wall of the Eiger." |
A. Wainwright

A spectacular route climbing the steep southern face of Grasmoor End up the glorious Lorton Gully, a three star grade 3 scramble, good scrambling with wonderful view over Crummock Water below. A few steep sections give this route the real feeling of exposure at times. |

Grasmoor |

Hopegill Head (Optional) |
770 metres/2526 feet

"Whiteside is the finest viewpoint for the coastal plain of West Cumberland, the Solway Firth, and the hills of Scotland beyond; a magnificent uninterrupted panorama crammed with detail." |
William Wordsworth

From Lanthwaite Green we will climb to the north eastacross the scree slopes at the foot of Grasmoor End to meet the foot of Lorton Gully, the steep gully that is obvious from the roadside. A shallow gully leads above the scree to the start of the propper scrambling. Easy rocky stepps soon lead to more tricky sections above, climbing up the narrow gully, around tree roots until the gully splits and we take the left hand branch. Easier rock now leads up to the left with wonderful views over the valley below and across to the Buttermere Fells as well as west to the Cumbrian coastline. As we climb higher the difficulty eases, but the views get better and better until we are at the top of Grasmoor End, one of the best viewpoints in the Lake District. A short walk up the grassy slope will now bring us up to the summit of Grasmoor, the highest of the North Western Fells. From the summit of Grasmoor we can either descend by Gasgale Gill, a gentle descent byt a beautiful stream back to Lanthwaite Green or alternatively we can continue across Coledale Hause to the summit of Hopegill Head and follow the ridge back to Lanthwaite Green over Whiteside, a wonderful narrow ridge. Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above. |
